HKTV Profile
Hong
Kong Television Network Limited, also known as HKTV, is a Hong
Kong-based multimedia company. The company provides digital content
and retail services in Hong Kong, as well as operating an online
shopping mall platform.
HKTV was founded in 1992 by businessman
Ricky Wong Wai-kay, initially as a television production company. In
2013, HKTV applied for a free-to-air television license in Hong Kong,
but was initially denied by the government. This decision sparked
protests and controversy, with supporters arguing that the company had
fulfilled all requirements for the license.
Despite the
setback, HKTV continued to expand its operations in other areas,
including launching an online shopping platform in 2014. The company
also produces a range of digital content, including dramas, variety
shows, and news programs.
In 2016, HKTV acquired the company
that owns the China Animation Characters Company, which holds the
rights to a number of popular Chinese animation characters. The
acquisition was seen as part of HKTV's strategy to expand its digital
content offerings and enter the mainland Chinese market.
As of
March 2023, HKTV is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange with a
market capitalization of approximately HKD 6
